の中で～が一番 / のなかで～がいちばん【のなかで～がいちばん / のなかで～がいちばん】

の中で～が一番 is how you say "the most" or "the best" out of a group. The group goes before のなか中で, the one that comes out on top takes が, and いちばん一番 goes straight before the adjective. Beginners' books often write it in kana, のなかで and いちばん.

The adjective can be an い-adjective or a な-adjective. すき好き and じょうず上手 are な-adjectives, so the thing you like or are good at takes が, not を.

• × 果物の中でりんごを一番好きです → 果物の中でりんごが一番好きです

Asking which is the most

In a question, a question word stands where the answer will go, and it takes が too. Use なん何 for things in a category, だれ for people, どこ for places, いつ for times, and どれ for things in front of you or a list you have named. The answer keeps が.

• × 何は一番おいしいですか → 何が一番おいしいですか

Two things or more

The pattern picks one out of three or more. You can list them with と before の中で. To compare just two, ask with どちら instead.

A place or a time

With a place or a span of time, plain で is enough.

With a verb

Before a verb, 一番 usually comes with an adverb: いちばん一番よく, いちばん一番はやく速く. The object of the verb takes を as usual.
