[verb] + 什么
[verb] + 什么 + [object]
[adjective] + 什么
什么 straight after a verb can turn the question into an objection: there's no reason to be doing this. 哭什么 means "stop crying", and nobody expects an answer.
It's spoken and fairly direct. Among friends it's warm: it waves away thanks or politeness.
The object goes after 什么, so 什么 lands between the verb and its object.
After an adjective, 什么 flatly denies it.
V什么V repeats the verb for extra annoyance.
The same words can still be a real question: 你笑什么 can ask what's funny. Intonation and the situation decide.
