Lesson 85 of 126
The lesson
8.11 ~ほど — degree / extent
Overview
~ほど is used to express degree or extent. It means “to the extent that”, “so … that”, or “as much as”.
A ~ほど B → B happens to the extent of A
The main clause describes the result or evaluation, and ~ほど marks how far it goes. In other words, ~ほど follows the phrase that shows the degree of the second phrase.
To say something is not to that extent, use ~ほど~ない (with a negative verb in the main clause).
Comparison / scale (“the more … the more …”)
~ほど can be used to show that a change in one thing affects another.
