後の / 後【あとの / あと】

後の before a noun means "the rest of", "the remaining": what is left once part has been dealt with. 後 straight before a number and counter, with no の, means "more" or "to go". In both senses the word is often written in kana, あと.

後の or 後 + number

A noun needs の: あと後のもんだい問題, "the remaining problems". A number and counter take no の: ご後みっつ３つ, "three more", ご後いちじかん１時間, "one more hour".

あと後すこし少し works the same way: "a little more", "nearly".

Usage notes

These go beyond "the rest" and "more".

あと at the start of a sentence

In conversation, あと on its own adds one more item: "and also", "anything else".

後の or 後で

あと後で is a time, "later". 後の is what remains.
