だけど

だけど is a casual conjunction meaning "but," "however," or "although." It is used to express contrast, contradiction, or to soften a statement. While けど connects two clauses within a sentence, だけど is used between sentences – at the start of a new sentence to push back on or add a contrasting point to what was just said.

Sentence-initial conjunction

だけど frequently appears at the beginning of a sentence, functioning like "but" or "however" in English. It connects back to something previously said or to shared context.

In this usage, だけど is similar to でも but tends to sound slightly softer. Compared to しかし, だけど is much more casual and is primarily used in spoken Japanese.

After nouns and な-adjectives

When けど follows a noun or な-adjective, the copula だ is required, forming だけど. This connects two contrasting clauses within a single sentence.

Trailing usage – softening and hedging

だけど is used at the end of a sentence, leaving the contrasting thought unfinished. This softens the statement or implies hesitation.

This trailing んだけど pattern (のだ + けど) is extremely common in conversation for bringing up a topic gently before making a request or asking a question.

Variants

だけど has more formal counterparts: だけれど and だけれども. These are used in polite speech or writing but carry the same meaning.
