The particle で has two main functions: to indicate the location of an action or the means by which an action is performed. It answers the questions "where" (for actions) and "how/with what/by what means."

• Location of action

  Indicates the place where an action or event occurs. It is used with action verbs, as opposed to に, which is used for states or destinations.

  こうえん公園であそびます遊びます。

  I play at the park.

• Means or instrument

  Marks the tool, method, or means used to carry out an action.

  はし箸でごはんご飯をたべます食べます。

  I eat rice with chopsticks.

• Group or context

  Indicates the group or context within which an action occurs.

  にっぽん日本ではたらいています働いています。

  I am working in Japan.

• Cause or reason

  Indicates the reason or cause for an action or event.

  じしん地震でたてもの建物がこわれました壊れました。

  The building was destroyed by the earthquake.
