がる conjugates as a godan verb (五段・ラ行)
The suffix がる attaches to adjective stems to create a verb meaning "to show signs of ~", "to act as if ~", or "to appear to feel ~". It is used to describe other people's observable feelings or desires based on their outward behavior, since in Japanese you generally cannot directly state another person's internal emotions using adjectives alone.
い-adjective: Remove い and add がる
がる in its dictionary form describes a general tendency or repeated behavior, while がっている describes someone who is currently showing signs of that feeling.
When an adjective normally takes が (e.g., きごう〜がほしい欲しい, きごう〜がこわい怖い), the がる form turns it into a verb, so the particle changes to を.
Compare with the first-person form: わたくし私はあたらしい新しいばっぐバッグがほしい欲しい (I want a new bag).
In Japanese, adjectives like うれしい嬉しい, かなしい悲しい, こわい怖い, and ほしい欲しい directly express your own feelings. To describe someone else's feelings – which you can only observe from the outside – you use がる / がっている.
Some がる forms are so common that they function as standalone verbs:
Since がる creates a godan (五段) verb, it conjugates normally: がらない (negative), がった (past), がって (te-form), etc.
