反面【はんめん】

反面 (はんめん) literally means "the opposite side" or "the flip side," and is used to express that something has two contrasting aspects. It highlights that while one thing is true, the opposite or a contradictory quality also exists – often about the same subject.

It is similar in meaning to "on the other hand," "while," or "at the same time" in English. Unlike けど or が, which simply connect contrasting clauses, 反面 specifically emphasizes that both sides coexist as inherent qualities of the same thing or person.

Usage

反面 follows verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, and nouns in their plain forms:

• Verb (plain form)

    とかい都会はべんり便利なはんめん反面、やちんがたかい家賃が高い。

    City life is convenient, but on the other hand, rent is expensive.

• い-adjective

  • 反面
    このしごと仕事はたのしい楽しいはんめん反面、せきにん責任がおもい重い。

• な-adjective + な / である

Nuance

反面 is used when describing two-sided characteristics – the positive and negative aspects of something, or two qualities that naturally contrast with each other. It carries a more formal and written tone compared to casual conjunctions like けど or いっぽう一方で.
