かしら

The sentence-ending particle かしら expresses wonder, doubt, or uncertainty, equivalent to "I wonder" in English. It is traditionally associated with feminine speech and is the female counterpart of かな.

Expressing wonder or uncertainty

かしら is attached to the end of a sentence to express that the speaker is wondering about something or is unsure.

Asking oneself a question

かしら can be used when the speaker is thinking aloud or asking a rhetorical question, often directed at no one in particular.

Attachment rules

• Verbs (plain form): 行く + かしら → いく行くかしら
• い-adjectives: 高い + かしら → たかい高いかしら
• な-adjectives: 静か + かしら → しずか静かかしら (no だ)
• Nouns: 本当 + かしら → ほんとう本当かしら (no だ)

Unlike かな, かしら does not require だ after nouns and な-adjectives. Using だ before かしら sounds unnatural.

かしら vs. かな

Both かしら and かな mean "I wonder," but かしら is primarily used by women, while かな is gender-neutral and more commonly heard in everyday casual conversation. In modern Japanese, many younger women also prefer かな over かしら, making かしら somewhat more common among older speakers or in written dialogue.
