かかる

かかる says how long something takes or how much it costs. The amount of time or money goes straight in front of it, with no particle.

English "take" pulls learners towards を, but the amount is not an object.

What it takes time for

What the time or money goes into takes に; a whole action takes のに after the dictionary form. A journey is usually given with から and まで.

To ask, use どのくらい for time and いくら for money.

時間がかかる, お金がかかる

Without a number, the words じかん時間 and おかねお金 are the subject and take が.

かかる or かける

かかる is the intransitive half of a pair: the time or money is needed. かける is transitive: someone spends it, on purpose, and the time or money takes を.
