～方【かた】

The suffix ほう方 (かた) attaches to a verb stem to create a noun meaning "the way of doing ~" or "how to do ~". The result is always a noun, so it can be followed by particles like は, が, を, etc.

Formation

Remove the ます from the ます-form of a verb and add ほう方:

• たべる食べる → 食べます → 食べ方 (way of eating)
• よむ読む → 読みます → 読み方 (way of reading)
• つかう使う → 使います → 使い方 (way of using)
• する → します → し方 / 仕方 (way of doing)

Asking "how to do something"

One of the most common uses is asking how to do something with 〜～かた方 + を + 教えてください or 〜～かた方 + が + 分かりません.

Describing a way of doing something

You can describe or comment on someone's way of doing something.

With の to modify

Since 〜～かた方 creates a noun, you can use の before it to specify whose way or what kind of way.

Note on する

For する verbs (noun + する), the pattern is typically noun + の + し方 rather than attaching 方 directly.
