なんという, なんと, and なんて are exclamatory expressions used to convey strong emotion – surprise, admiration, shock, sadness, or disbelief – about something. They correspond to English phrases like "What a...!" or "How...!". These forms are largely interchangeable in exclamatory use, but differ in formality and nuance.

なんという – "What a...!" (most formal)

なんという literally means "what is called" but in exclamatory sentences it expresses strong emotion about a noun or situation. It directly modifies a noun.

It can also be used in genuine questions meaning "what is it called?":

なんと – "How...!" / "What...!"

なんと is used before adjectives, adverbs, or verb phrases to emphasize degree. It is relatively formal and often appears in written language or dramatic speech. なんと can also introduce surprising information, similar to "surprisingly" or "would you believe":

なんて – "How...!" / "What a...!" (most casual)

なんて is the most colloquial of the three and is very common in everyday conversation. It can modify both nouns and adjectives/verbs.
