Note: だ cannot be used before にもかかわらず – use な or である instead.
にもかかわらず means "despite," "in spite of," or "nevertheless." It expresses that the result in the second clause is unexpected or contradictory given what is stated in the first clause. It has a formal tone and is commonly found in written Japanese, news reports, essays, and formal speech.
にもかかわらず attaches to various forms:
For な-adjectives and nouns, だ is replaced by な or である before にもかかわらず (not だにもかかわらず).
にもかかわらず is used to highlight a surprising or contradictory outcome. The speaker emphasizes that what happened was contrary to what one would normally expect.
にもかかわらず can also be placed at the beginning of a sentence to connect to the previous sentence, functioning like "nevertheless" or "even so."
Compared to the more casual のに, にもかかわらず sounds significantly more formal and emphatic. While のに often carries a tone of personal disappointment or complaint, にもかかわらず is more objective and is preferred in formal writing and speeches.
