せめて

せめて is an adverb meaning "at least". It expresses the speaker's wish or desire for a minimum acceptable outcome when the ideal situation is not possible. It conveys a sense of resignation – the speaker acknowledges they cannot have everything they want, but hopes for at least this much.

Expressing a minimum wish

せめて is most common when the speaker lowers their expectations and asks for or hopes for the bare minimum.

The nuance is: "I know I can't ask for much, but at the very least, I want this."

せめて often appears with particles and expressions that reinforce the "minimum" nuance:

Nuance

せめて always carries an emotional undertone – the speaker feels that the situation is not ideal and is settling for less. Because of this, it often appears in sentences expressing wishes (〜～たい, 〜～てほしい, 〜～ばよかった) or suggestions/requests. It would sound unnatural in a purely factual statement with no sense of desire or regret.

• せめてしゅう週にいちかい一回はうんどう運動したい。

  I want to exercise at least once a week.
  (implies: ideally more, but at minimum this)
• 少なくとも週に一回は運動している。 – "I exercise at least once a week." (factual; here すくなく少なくとも is more appropriate)
