したがって

したがって means "therefore", "consequently": what follows is the conclusion that the previous sentence leads to. It opens the second sentence, or follows a comma inside one, and it belongs to formal writing and speech.

It comes from したがう従う, "to follow", and is sometimes written したがって従って. The literal sense is "following from this".

したがって or だから

だから is the everyday "so". したがって is for reports, papers, notices and formal announcements; in conversation it sounds like someone reading aloud. そのため and よって are written alternatives, よって the stiffest of them.

• × (to a friend) お腹すいた。したがって、何か食べよう → お腹すいた。だから、何か食べよう

したがって and にしたがって

After a noun or a verb, にしたがって is a different pattern: "as X changes, Y changes" or "in accordance with". At the head of a sentence or after a comma, したがって is the conjunction.
