たがる

たがる says that someone else wants to do something, judged from what they say or do. It goes on the ます-stem, like たい, and is itself a godan verb: いきたがる行きたがる, いきたがらない行きたがらない, いきたがった行きたがった, いきたがっている行きたがっている.

たい or たがる

たい is for your own wish, or for asking about the listener's. A plain statement about a third person's wish takes たがる, because all you can see is the signs of it.

• × 彼は旅行に行きたいです → 彼は旅行に行きたがっています

You can also keep たい and report it: いきたい行きたいといっている言っている, "he says he wants to go". Said of someone above you, たがる sounds blunt, and the report with といっている言っている or とおっしゃっている is the polite choice.

たがっている and たがる

For what someone wants right now, use たがっている. Plain たがる is a habit or a tendency: what the person always wants.

The object takes を

With たい, the object can take が or を. たがる is an ordinary verb describing behaviour, and its object takes を.
