3.6 い-adjectives — Conjugation
Overview
い-adjectives conjugate by changing their ending directly. They do not use だ or です to express tense or negation.
The dictionary form ends in い.
To form the past, replace い with かった.
To form the negative, replace い with くない.
To form the past negative, replace くない with くなかった.
Politeness is added with です after the adjective. The adjective itself still conjugates the same way.
The adjective いい is irregular. Its conjugation is based on よい.
This also applies to other adjectives that end in よい良い, such as かっこいい:
However, not all adjectives that end in double い are derived from よい良い. For example, かわいい conjugates regularly despite ending in いい. In kanji, it is written as かわいい可愛い and the first い comes from あい愛.
