果たして【はたして】

Usage 1: "As expected" / "Sure enough"

In this usage, 果たして conveys a sense of "just as I/we thought" – the speaker confirms that reality matched their expectations.

Usage 2: "Really?" / "I wonder whether..."

When used in interrogative sentences or with expressions of doubt, 果たして adds a tone of serious questioning or skepticism. It signals that the speaker genuinely wonders whether something is true or possible.

This usage often pairs with question markers like だろうか, のだろうか, or かどうか. It adds weight and seriousness to the question – it is not a casual "I wonder" but a deep or concerned doubt.
