限り【かぎり】

限り (かぎり) expresses conditions, limits, and extents. It connects to verbs, adjectives, and nouns in various ways depending on the meaning intended.

As long as / While… is the case

When attached to a verb (dictionary form or ている form), い-adjective, な-adjective + な/である, or noun + である, 限り expresses a condition that must remain true for the main clause to hold. It translates as "as long as" or "while… is the case."

With the negative form, it expresses "unless":

As far as (I know / I can see / etc.)

Combined with perception or knowledge verbs like しる知る, みる見る, しらべる調べる, 限り means "as far as" and is used to qualify a statement based on the speaker's knowledge or observation. Common set phrases include しっている知っているかぎり限り (as far as I know), みた見たかぎり限り (as far as I can see), and しらべた調べたかぎり限り (as far as I've investigated).

To the fullest extent / As much as possible

When used with expressions like できるかぎりできる限り or ちから力のかぎり限り, 限り conveys the meaning of "to the fullest extent" or "as much as possible."

Limited to / Only

When used with にかぎり限り or にかぎって限って, it expresses that something is limited to a specific group, time, or condition.

Important notes

• 限り is more formal and literary than casual alternatives like ま間は or うちは.

• Do not confuse 〜～ないかぎり限り ("unless") with 〜～かぎり限り ("as long as") – they express opposite conditions.

• The particle では is sometimes added after 限り for emphasis: しっている知っているかぎり限りでは.
