では, それでは, and じゃあ are conjunctive expressions used to signal a transition based on what has just been said or on the current situation. They translate to "well then," "in that case," or "if so" in English.

These three forms differ primarily in formality:

• じゃあ – the most casual; very common in everyday conversation
• では – formal; used in speeches, writing, and polite settings
• それでは – polite but slightly less stiff than では; common in business and semi-formal contexts

Drawing a conclusion from prior information

The most common use is to respond to something just said and propose an action or draw a conclusion based on it.

Transitioning to a new topic or action

では and それでは are used by speakers (teachers, presenters, meeting leaders) to smoothly transition to the next topic or activity. In this usage, they function like "now then" or "all right."

Saying goodbye or parting

All three forms are used when wrapping up a conversation or saying goodbye, often followed by phrases like また or しつれい失礼します.

• じゃ is an even more abbreviated casual form of じゃあ, sometimes heard in very relaxed speech.
