とはいえ is a formal conjunction meaning "having said that," "although," "nonetheless," or "be that as it may." It acknowledges the truth of the preceding statement while introducing a contrasting or qualifying point. It is more literary and formal than けど or でも, and is commonly found in written Japanese, speeches, and formal discussions.

Basic usage

とはいえ can follow a complete statement (often at the start of a new sentence) or attach directly to a clause.

After nouns and na-adjectives

When following a noun or na-adjective, とはいえ attaches directly without だ.

At the beginning of a sentence

とはいえ frequently appears at the very beginning of a sentence to connect back to the previous statement, functioning much like "that said" or "be that as it may" in English.

Nuance

The key nuance of とはいえ is concession with reservation. The speaker fully accepts the first point as true but feels compelled to add an important qualification or counterpoint. It carries a sense of "yes, that's true, but even so…" This makes it stronger than a simple けど and more balanced than にもかかわらず (which emphasizes the contrast more sharply).

とはいえ is interchangeable with とはいう言うものの in most contexts, though とはいう言うものの can sound slightly more conversational.
