Getting started
Languages and scripts
Lingaku teaches Japanese and Chinese. You study one at a time and can switch at any time. Menus, explanations and meanings can be shown in English or another language.
- Website
- Mobile app
- Browser extension
Switching language
- Website: the language menu with the flag in the top bar, or in the side menu on a phone.
- App: Account → Language.
- Extension: the language switch at the top of the sidebar.
Levels, decks and lookups are kept separately for each language, so switching never mixes them.
Interface language
The interface language is the language of menus, buttons, messages and this help.
- Website: Interface language in the account menu, the language menu at the bottom of the page, or Account settings → Language.
- App: chosen on first start. Once you sign in, the app uses the interface language of your account.
- Extension: Settings → Interface language in the sidebar.
Signed in, your choice is saved to your account. If you open a page of the website in another language, a link at the bottom offers the same page in yours.
Language of explanations
Courses, lessons, grammar explanations, the decks that come with Lingaku and dictionary meanings have their own setting: Language of explanations, under Account settings → Language on the website. It follows the interface language unless you pick another one, so you can, for example, use the site in English and read the explanations in Slovak.
Translated content
Where a translation exists, courses, lessons, grammar points and decks show in your language of explanations. Where it does not, they show in English. A page can be partly translated: a lesson might have a translated explanation and English exercises.
Only the explanations are translated. Words, sentences and examples in the language you learn stay exactly as they are, and open the same popups.
Dictionary meanings in your language are machine translations. See Meanings in your language.
