なければならない

なければならない means "must", "have to": something is required by a rule, a duty or the situation. Take the ない-form of a verb and replace ない with なければ, then add ならない: いかない行かない → いかなければ行かなければならない. なりません makes it polite.

Only the stem of the ない-form stays: くる来る → こない来ない → こなければ来なければならない, read こなければ.

• × 行かないければならない → 行かなければならない

Register

なければならない is the stiffest of the "must" forms. It is the usual one in writing, rules, notices and speeches. In conversation なければいけない, ないと and the contraction なきゃ are far more frequent.

なくてはならない

なくては in place of なければ gives the same meaning, and is just as formal.

Must not

The opposite, "must not", is てはならない after the て-form, not a negative of this pattern.
