Note: Often used with temporal nouns (日、時、今日) or specific people/things to express irony or emphasis.

Description

に限って (にかぎって) is used to single out a specific person, thing, or situation, often with the nuance that something unexpected, ironic, or contradictory happens precisely in that case. It expresses the speaker's frustration, surprise, or insistence that "of all things/people/times, this is the one where…"

There are two main usages:

1. "Of all…" – Ironic or Murphy's Law situations

This is the most common usage. The speaker highlights that something undesirable or unexpected happens precisely with the one person, thing, or time you'd least expect.

It's precisely when I'm in a hurry that the train is late.

It only rains on the days I don't have an umbrella.

My child, of all people, would never do such a thing.

In this pattern, the speaker is expressing something like "of all the possible times/people/things, it's this one that causes trouble." The second clause typically describes something negative or contrary to expectation.

2. "Only" – Limiting to a specific group

に限って can also simply mean "only" or "limited to," restricting the scope to a particular group or condition. This usage overlaps with にかぎり限り, which is more formal.

Only for today, we are offering a special menu.

にかぎり限り – A more formal written variant meaning "limited to," often seen in notices and announcements.
にかぎら限らず – Means "not limited to," expressing that something applies more broadly.
とはかぎらない限らない – Means "it is not necessarily the case that…"

Notes

The ironic usage (pattern 1) is much more common in everyday conversation and typically carries a tone of complaint or disbelief.
The subject marked by に限って is something the speaker considers special or unlikely to be associated with the outcome described.
