Adjective + て + B【B ～て (Qualities and States)】

The て-form of adjectives is used to connect two or more qualities or states in a single sentence, similar to "and" in English. It allows you to describe something with multiple characteristics or link descriptive clauses together.

い-adjectives

For い-adjectives, drop the final い and add くて.

• おおきい大きい → 大きくて - やすい安い → 安くて - おいしい → おいしくて

The special adjective いい (good) uses its irregular stem: いい → よくて.

な-adjectives

For な-adjectives, replace な with で.

• しずか静かな → 静かで - げんき元気な → 元気で - きれいな → きれいで

Connecting adjectives to other clauses

The て-form of adjectives can also link a descriptive clause to a following clause that may contain a verb or further description. The first clause often provides a reason or background for the second.

Negative form

For the negative て-form, use なくて (from ない → なくて).

Notes

• You can chain more than two adjectives using て-forms in sequence.

  このまち町はしずか静かできれいですみやすいです住みやすいです。

  This town is quiet, beautiful, and easy to live in.

• The て-form generally implies that the qualities coexist or are related. It should not be used to contrast qualities – use けど or が for contrast instead.
