Reading and lookups

Reading texts

Lingaku has a library of texts at different levels, and reads any text you paste in. Every word in them opens the popup.

The text library

Texts lists the library with a search box and tag filters. Signed in, it starts with Continue reading (texts you opened), Favorites and My texts. Each card shows the text’s level, how many of its words you know and a short preview.

The menu on a text adds it to favorites, marks it done, removes it from Continue reading, and for your own texts edits or deletes it. Mark as done files the text as finished without recording its words; Mark as read, below, records them.

Adding your own texts

Signed in, Create Text adds a text of your own with a title, tags and the content. It is listed under My texts and is not shown to other users.

Level and difficulty

Each text has a level from JLPT N5 to N1 and a difficulty score, where higher is harder. The stats line shows the score, the number of words and the share you know (Known or Mastered).

Reading your own text

Read opens an empty reader. Paste or type a text and press Analyze; Edit goes back to change it. Nothing is saved, and no account is needed.

You can also paste a text of several lines into the search dialog and choose Read text.

How words are marked

Signed in, words are marked by your level for them:

LevelMarked with
Newa faint background
Seena stronger background
Familiara solid underline
Knowna dashed underline
Masterednothing

Three more marks can appear on top: a ring around words in your Currently learning batch, a wavy red underline on words that need attention, and a dotted outline on words that are highly relevant for you.

A paragraph with words marked by level and the level legend
Faint and stronger backgrounds are New and Seen words, underlines are Familiar and Known. Mastered words are not marked.

Hovering over a word shows its reading above it.

Mark as read

Mark as read, at the end of a text, records the whole text as read. Every word in it counts as met, and the words you did not look up are offered for a higher level, so the words you already know stop coming back.

While you read signed in, Lingaku also counts the words that stay on screen as met, without the button. Watch what you read in the study options turns this off.
