末に (すえに) expresses the idea of "after (a long process of)" or "at the end of," indicating that something happened as a final result following a prolonged effort, deliberation, or series of events. It emphasizes the weight or difficulty of the process that led to the outcome.

Basic Usage

末に attaches to nouns (often with の) or the past tense of verbs:

• Noun + の + 末に: なやんだ悩んだ → なやんだ悩んだすえに末に
  • Verb[た] + 末に: そうだん相談した → そうだん相談したすえに末に

Nuance

Unlike けっか結果 (けっか) or あと後で (あとで), 末に carries a strong nuance that the process leading to the result was lengthy, difficult, or involved considerable effort. It is used with outcomes that feel significant – whether positive or negative.

Because of this nuance, 末に sounds unnatural with trivial or effortless actions. You would not say something like 「朝ご飯を食べた末に、出かけた」 because eating breakfast is not a prolonged or difficult process.
