Purpose ("in order to")
Cause/Reason ("because of, due to")
The grammar structure ため (often used as ために) has two primary meanings: purpose ("in order to," "for the sake of") and cause/reason ("because of," "due to"). The meaning depends on context and the form of the word that precedes it.
When expressing purpose, ために indicates the goal or objective of an action. The verb before ために is in the dictionary (plain non-past) form, and the action described is intentional and volitional.
When a noun precedes ため, it takes the particle の:
An important rule for the purpose usage: the subject of both clauses must be the same person, since the action is done deliberately toward a goal.
When expressing cause or reason, ために explains why something happened. In this usage, the verb before ために can be in the た-form (past tense) or the dictionary form for ongoing states, and it often describes situations that are non-volitional or beyond one's control.
い-adjectives and な-adjectives can also precede ため to express cause:

ため is relatively formal and is common in written Japanese, news, and formal speech. In casual conversation, から or ので are more natural for expressing reasons, and the ~ように construction is sometimes preferred for purpose with non-volitional verbs.
