The refugees were living in a narrow, squalid backstreet.

For many years I thought that it was beauty alone that gave significance to life and that the only purpose that could be assigned to the generations that succeed one another on the face of this crowded earth was to produce an artist now and then.

This city may be a little run-down, but the people living here are all kind, and will welcome anyone with open arms.

I don't like messy places like this. I'd rather live somewhere clean and peaceful.
